The practice of Massage Therapy is the assessment of the soft tissue and joints of the body and the treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain of the soft tissues and joints by manipulation to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function, or relieve pain.
My addition to this definition:
Massage therapy involves the manual manipulation of soft tissues in the body, such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue, to promote relaxation, alleviate pain, and improve overall well-being. This therapeutic technique encompasses a variety of methods, including kneading, rubbing, pressing, stretching and applying pressure to specific points on the body.
The primary goals of massage therapy are to reduce muscle tension, enhance circulation, promote lymphatic drainage, and alleviate physical discomfort. It can be used to address a wide range of conditions, including stress, anxiety, chronic pain, sports injuries, and musculoskeletal disorders.
Massage therapists utilize their knowledge of anatomy and physiology to tailor treatments to each individual's needs, often incorporating techniques from various modalities such as Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage, trigger point therapy, and stretching.
